1999 1/2 1.8T Quattro (sport package). Just underneath driver's foot (at driver's tire/suspension) there is a clunking sound (suspernsio related?) that sometimes can be felt through steering wheel. Driving slowly over uneven road or small road bumps is when it is heard most often. Audi dealer (twice) could not find anything wrong. Does anyone have a similar situation? Thank you all. peter jasz

We live in northern Wisconsin and only use the A/C about 1.5 months and we don't put on a lot of miles. Consumer Reports' "reliablity histories" show a lot of problems with A/C and suspension with '96 A4s. Anyone have similar problems?

Check engine light (MIL) came on at 2830, 3032, and 3264 miles.
Malfunction Resolution:
1st visit to dealer checked ECM fault codes which report poor idle although car runs fine. Dealer reset ECM, faults did not return. 2nd occurence at 3032 miles checked again with same fault code (car still runs fine). Dealer replaced camshaft position sensor. 3rd occurence at 3264 miles checked again with same fault code (runs fine). Dealer has mechanic not rely on fault codes and manually check cam timing which is found to be 1/2 tooth advanced. Timing is off so little that no one can feel it, but the ECM senses it and under the right circumstances will turn on the light. Timing belt moved 1/2 tooth on sprocket, everything okay. No recurrence. The car now has 57000 miles and I've had no trouble at all. An excellent car.

I love this car. It handles great, feels solid, and the fit and finish is perfect. I only had a few slight malfunctions. The sunroof rattles every once in a while, the dealer said to just close it slightly and it goes away. Also, just after refueling, sometimes it runs rough and pressure builds up in the gas tank. The cap bubbles and some gas leaks out. This has happened twice. Other than this I am very happy with this car. It is a little sluggish in the city because of the turbo, but once I get on the highway and it spools up it's pretty fast. I recommend the naturally aspirated V6 if you can swing it.
Malfunction Resolution:
The dealer is very helpful and corrects any problems. They also wash it for free. I am concerned about the faulty ignition coil issue in all VWs and Audis that I read about this weekend. Audi should recall them, rather than wait for them to stop working.

Got the car used but Audi Assured @22,000 miles. Day one the key got stuck in the ignition and will not come out. Then a week later, Check the engine light and the airbag light came on, then radio display started blinking, then passenger heated seat will not heat properly all repaired under Audi warranty but this should not happen with a $30k+ German car with low miles!!! During the Audi Assured certification the front rotors and pads were replaced, oil pan gasket replaced, vacum lines replaced all done at 23,000 miles. Also a small buldge on the drivers seat leather appeared but was repaired under warranty. The car also consumes oil at about one quart per 1,000 miles! Im glad I got an extended warranty!!! The car still is great to drive but I don't know if I will keep it for 5 years. Also the Audi dealership(HBL of tysons) has great service. They will give you a free loaner for up to 3 days and will wash your car after the work is done! I like the car and the dealership but I worry at the back of my mind about the reliability issues that may appear soon.

Ignition coils were replaced under warranty. Audi had the car for almost 10 days - they picked up the cost of a rental car. The radion and speedometer have not reoccurred to date...stay tuned.

Engine sputtering at idle and low speed. Occured three or four times in two days before I took it in to the dealer. I had just finished reading an article about 1.8T engine's failing ignition coils. As it turns out, that was the problem-failed ignition coil on cylinder #4. After 16 days of driving a plastic Chevy Cavalier, I got my car back. Running smooth as ever for now.
Malfunction Resolution:
16 days in the shop waiting on ignition coil. Dealer did not replace the remaining three coils, so I can probably expect failure of those as well. When is VW/Audi going to issue a recall on this?! The dealer was great, no complaints there. Just big disappointment with AudiUSA.

At 1800 miles Air Conditioning system ceased to work. Was pumping out hot air.Manufacturers report was that a leak in the Air/con system had allowed the gases or fluid out.Fixed under warranty. Thereafter all sorts of ekectrical problems-lights coming on when they shouldn,t be coming on,indicator lights dimly glowing when the car,s ignitionwas switched off. Then the engine oil level light started coming on.Dealer said it was dashboard pod needed to be replaced.Went to dealer on two ocassions-1st time they said that Audi had sent the wrong pod-2nd.time the right pod had been sent-but found to be broken on unpacking it.To add insult to injury-the dealer cracked the windscreen and told us they would order a 3rd.pod!That was the day before we went on vacation-Whilst on vacation all the electrics in the car kept coming on and going off-e.g.Interior lights, indicators, dor locks, alarm system .Got it to an Audi dealer in Torquay who found that the air.con system had leaked into the fot well of the passenger side and flooded the computer control unit which is housed under the passenger footwell. So the original electrical problem was nothing to do with the dash pod at all! A month before this was discovered, the car started making a clatteringt noise on the first start of each day-whilst in Torquay the engineer there said he had traced it to the cam shaft belt adjusters. He told us to take it to our home dealer. We did-they kept it for two days-said it was cured-but the following morning-Ther it was again-the same noise! Being fed up we took it to another dealer who on hearing the noise said-"ther is something radically wrong-leave the car with us".Seven days later they phoned to say they had cured the noise by replacing two adjusters .Retrieved the car-on getting it home-discovered the noise was just as bad as ever. Have given up-can,t wait to get rid of it!

Bought the car used 2.5 years ago. Took car in for 60,000 service. Was advised that there were numerous seals (3) leaking, significant amounts of oil leaking down onto exhaust system (I had smelled oil when I got out after a long drive, but never saw any) washer pump hanging on by a thread. As long as they have it all apart they will replace the timing belt. Pretty funny when they told me my headlight washer pump needed replacing. I didn't know I had headlight washers. I have no idea how to use them. Got Audi to agree to install rear child seat anchors - available free to 1998 model year owners. But the whole seat back has to be replaced, and now the parts are back-ordered. We'll see how they do on this one.
Malfunction Resolution:
Replaced seals, timing belt, washer pump. $2500. Ouch. (Could a new engine much more?) That's it for me. Any more major malfunctions with this car and it will be traded it.

Car sputters, then dies a slow death. Had to be towed on flat bed to dealer. Ignition coils failed twice.
Malfunction Resolution:
Ignition coils failed twice. First occasion, was late October. Dealer fixed defective coil. We insisted that all four coils be replaced since others would also soon fail (see AudiWorld survey). Dealer refused. Guess what? Six weeks later, another coil failed. This time, supposedly no parts available in North America. Audi just waiting for cars to break down. Had a rental at over $50/day. Ignition coil wholesales at $22.70 (CDN). Don't need an MBA to figure out that this is costing Audi a lot of money, let alone causing a really negative "Audi Experience". I visited a few dealerships and found that dealers are stashing coils for their own customers. My dealer took new coils out of a 2003 showroom car and replaced all 3 remaining coils. Audi says parts are on order. If your A4 1.8T was built before May 2002, you can expect this problem. According to the service department, this problem is now cropping up on all VW products with this engine. I love the car, the dealer has been great, but Audi as a company is disappointing. By the way, I am a long time VW fan, with a 1966 BUG as a collector car, so Audi has really screwed up on a faithful VW customer. If VW would issue a recall, they could avoid a lot of problems.

Did not notice any problems, brought the car in for the 42,500 mile checkup. It should only have been an oil change. The dealer said that the tail shaft seal & left axle seal needed to be replaced. Along with the oil change, the total cost came out to $501(USD). I've had this car since 48,215 miles(5 months), bought it used and have liked it ever since I got it. The dealer also had told me that my windshield washer pump is leaking and needed to be replaced($200). I can't see any fluid leaking and have only filled it once or twice so far so it doesn't seem like a significant repair...will not replace.
Malfunction Resolution:
Dealer replaced seals, can't tell myself. It's Dec. in New England so I'm not getting under the car to see if I can tell if they replaced the parts. Not happy with the surprise bill, thought the car was in great shape going into the shop. Repairs not covered by warranty.

When the car was bought from a used dealer, check engine light was on, they did all sorts of things and never fix the problem. found out it was cylinder 1 miss firing. Never got it fix till around 119000K. It would hesitate at low rpms when accelerating on the gas. Took it to Audi dealer to get checked/$80. Said it was cylinder 1 injector. Bought the part for $122 (updated version)put it in my self. Sunroof keeps tilting, but other than that runs good no noises or other problems like some of us...knock on wood!

I just bought my A4 a short while ago and am amazed how the Germans can still make piss poor electrical systems. My air condioning digital controls flicker on and off and my radio doesn't work. Also I have the front end clunk everybody seems to have. It drives great on the interstate but slow and braking it makes some not pleasant noises. I am getting it looked at tomorrow. After owning a 94 Honda prelude with 168k miles and not one problem other than sunroof adjustment I think I made a mistake with buying this car.
Malfunction Resolution:
The resolution to my problems would be to find the engineer who designed the front end and shoot him (my dad is a mechanical engineer and says that) and also ask WHY???????? Do the Germans use vacuum locks on a 96 model car???????????

Since 5 Months this 2.5 TDI has been back to the dealership with the same recurring problem. When cold starting engine cranks (adequately) but not start. Sometimes the engine Blips but instantly dies. I have had various repairs done the last resulting in 500 bill for a new lift pump + most fuel lines replaced. Completely flummoxed. Apparently three other cars have had the same problem (In Belgium) but these have been fixed by apparently attaching a valve (I which I knew where). My Father, a mechanic, had noticed that when the engine is cranking (when displaying the problem) that the fuel filter is dry (suspicious) so hence the faulty lift pump diagnosis. My car has been at the dealership for about 8 weeks (in total) in the last 5 months Occasionally the car (on dealership advice!) can be made to start by continually cranking the car until the red oil lamps flashes and a beeping noise is emitted by the dash. sometimes this doesn't work and you end up killing the battery. Sorry for mixing symptoms with resolutions this is on going.

Two very loud, distingtive clunking sounds from front-end of vehicle when slowing to ten miles per hour. Happens when automatic transmission downshifts from 2nd to 1st gear and sometimes when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Makes a clunking noise when litely tapping throttle while coasting in any gear. No noise is noted while driving when the engine is cool, but becomes evident after transmission (not engine) heats up to running temperature.
Malfunction Resolution:
Dealer repair shop not quite sure what the problem is, at least that is what they claim. They are going to replace rear differential even though all the noises are in the front of the car. Any one else familiar with these simptoms?

A small continuous amount of gear oil leaked from Quattro transmission case. Automatic/manual trans surged slightly under acceleration. Possibly due to low fluid level which is impossible to check without jacking the car. Felt like a slipping clutch or actually a tork-coverter. Slight vibration also noticed under braking at higher speeds (65-70 mph). Feels fine at lower speeds. I purchased the vehicle used from an Audi dealer with 6500 miles. Got home from the dealer and noticed a couple small spots of oil on the floor the next day.
Malfunction Resolution:
Dealer's explaination was vague and claimed an "internal bolt" was defective and the cause of the oil leak. It sounded simple enough, but then I was told that the Audi factory had instructed dealer service department to completely replace the entire transmission. The entire engine was removed to access the trans. I am assuming replacing trans will correct the problem. I have not gotten the vehicle back from dealer as yet. Dealer checking brakes for vibration.

Current problems are: (1) Bose speaker on passenger side rear deck died. Total distortion on bass notes; (2) A couple of the mouldings attached to the exterior base of the doors are loose. They've rusted internally; (3) The pump that activates the headlight washers is shot so they don't work; (4) Windows sometimes squeal when raised or lowered; (5) Suspect that the heated mirrors aren't working- will know for sure in a few weeks. Past problems that were repaired: (1) Stereo subwoofer had to be replaced (and I really had never cranked the volume); (2) Moonroof needed repairs; (3) On/off switch on rear seat light broke off. Finally, there have been 4-6 times in 3 years when the car won't start. It turns over but won't start. Other times it starts but idles very poorly until I've driven for a minute or two. As bizzare as it seems, I think it has happened after I've run the car for only a few seconds...such as maneuvering it in the driveway...the previous start. Twice I had it towed to a dealer and the car started right up the next day. Once or twice I had to depress and hold the accelerator while turning the ignition and after 15 seconds it started. Anybody had a similar experience ?
Malfunction Resolution:
Some repairs were done under warranty and I had to pay for others. I drive about 25k per year so the 50k warranty period flew by.

I didn't think USA would allow a car into the country with those results. The dealer checked the system for leaks. No leaks or unusual wear to engine parts. At about 32,000 I started getting the infamous "clunking" sound in the front suspension, accompanied by a "loose" feeling, like the linkages weren't tight or something. At 29,000 I had to replace the CV boots and some engine seals.
Malfunction Resolution:
Foolishly thinking I'd save time and money I went to an independent German garage. Spent about $1200 repairing things that apparently weren't the problem before giving up. Went back to the dealer and they replaced the control arms. Fixed the problem for about $900. Spent about $2400 on the seals, CV boots, and other maint. My conclusion is that despite its problems I love Audis. That said I will never again own one out of warrantee! Thankfully the new ones now come with 4-year coverage. (I just sold my '98 and am investigating an '02 1.8T.) Overall I guess my experience wasn't any worse than with an American car... just more expensive to fix. If only Audi would hire a QA person from Honda...

At around 20,000 miles my normally silky smooth running 2.8L 30 valve V6 started to run like it had a crankcase full of marbles. The dealer replaced 2 Injectors, I thought this really odd. At the 37,500 mile service the dealer replaced my moonroof guides and fuel level sender in the tank. I sold a 1998 Corvette (my dream car) because my 9 and 10 year old kids were sitting on each others lap and the crap I was getting from my wife was unbearable, so I settled for my first German car the A4 Quatro. What a pleasant surprise, great car.
Malfunction Resolution:
Everything was covered under warranty, Injectors, Front End stuff, But they wouldn't replace the two front tires, moonroof guides, and fuel gauge sender were all covered.

During my tenure as a first A4 owner, i have the privilegde to change: 1. 5 turbines (at least one @ year) i'am an ordinary driver and a easy commuter not a speed freak. 2. The whole instrument panel, it was lifted or unglued from the steel frame by sun overheat (I live in San Juan, Puerto Rico) 3. The whole front suspension system because of a cranking sound (it happend by the 35,000 mile, and it comes again at 64,000)
Malfunction Resolution:
Almost all was covered by warranty. The last one I'am paying for it. I expect around $500 in labor & parts.

I have had endless problems with the front suspension. I bought the car from an individual in 2000 with 52000 miles on it. Not one week later I replaced the SwayBar links cause of a knock noise when goin over bumps. Car ran great till about 80,000 miles. The knock noise is back. The swaybar links are fine now and the lower control arm was replaced on the left side. Do these suspension part failures common. Should I expect to replace the parts again in another 80000 miles?
Malfunction Resolution:
Car still knocks and I am trying to figure out which component it is so I don't get the wrong suspension part replace by the mechanics again.

I'm reporting this a couple of years after the fact, but I'm curious as to how many other people experianced this problem. The front suspension started to feel loose and make groaning noises, especially over low speed bumps.
